Not a self-drive route, not a single honest comparison: a mix. Seven tracks pulled from different themes, all in one stretch of coastline. This is what a Mixtape is: pick a region, and we pull our real, cross-theme picks for it instead of making you browse route pages and journal posts separately.

The West Coast's actual delicacy, not a tourist gimmick. Whitebait season and prices swing hard, and plenty of places pad the fritter with more egg than fish. Naming our actual café pick soon. Check back.
Punakaiki's layered limestone stacks are genuinely worth the stop, but the blowholes only perform on a big swell near high tide. Most visitors turn up at the wrong time and wonder what the fuss is about. Check the tide table before you plan the day around it, not after.
The heli-hike is spectacular and genuinely expensive; the valley walk is free and gets you a real, if more distant, view of the glacier. The honest split: heli-hike if it's a once-in-a-lifetime splurge and the weather's clear, valley walk if you're budget-conscious or the chopper's grounded, which happens more than the brochures let on.
The postcard reflection of Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman needs still air, which usually means dawn. By mid-morning the wind picks up and the "mirror" is just a lake. Worth the early alarm; not worth turning up at 11am expecting the photo everyone's seen.
Hokitika boomed and nearly emptied out with the 1860s gold rush, and it's still a genuine centre for pounamu (greenstone) carving. Worth understanding both stories before buying a piece as a souvenir, so it means something instead of being a generic tourist purchase.
Naming this one soon. The whole point of this track is an exact stop with an exact reason, not a vague "there's a nice detour somewhere along here," so we're waiting until we can name it for real.
A lagoon kayak and a real shot at spotting a kiwi in the wild, a fraction of the foot traffic of Franz Josef or Fox down the road. The trade-off: less dramatic scenery, more genuine quiet. A good pairing with track 03 if the glacier towns feel like a queue.
