Gentle & Short
Walks that fit into a morning or afternoon without eating the whole day. No special gear, no booking, just a formed track and an hour or two of your time. Most are suitable for a range of fitness levels.
Punakaiki, West Coast. Paved and largely accessible. Best near high tide for the blowholes to actually perform — a genuinely impressive geological sight in under half an hour.
Bay of Plenty. Wide, flat loop around the base of Mauao — reportedly NZ's single most-walked track. Pushchair-friendly. The summit track is a harder option (steep, ~40 min up).
Piha, Waitākere Ranges. Through native bush to a three-tiered waterfall. Gets busy on Auckland weekends in summer — go early or on a weekday for a quieter experience.
Taupō. Flat track along the Waikato River from the Taupō Bungy carpark to Huka Falls. The volume of water funnelled through the narrow canyon is genuinely impressive year-round.
