New Zealand
Unfiltered, behind-the-hype travel plans, built from our own vetted content. We'll tell you if it's overrated, and skip that, do this instead. Build your own custom Travel Mix using the same content from this website.

Hand-picked, not algorithm-picked
Filter by what you're into, then scroll. Every card below is real, published content, not a preview of something coming later. Same honest picks as the Travel Mixer, just laid out to browse.
Why Mixtape
We’ve been to these places, giving us first hand knowledge and can honestly tell you what’s worth it.
We know a fair few people in the biz and we listen to their feedback, we also screen against public data: every source is checked.
It’s gotta be said, not everything is amazing, but many guides will tell you otherwise. When we say it’s a “must-see” we really mean it.
Build your own custom travel mix: Tell us what you’re into, get the honest picks that match: built from the very content from this site.
Not sure where to start?
Slow coastal drives, one big hike, or the fiord everyone skips? Create Your Mixtape pulls the honest picks that match your route, dates and interests: no quiz, no generated itinerary, just filtered from what's actually published and fact-checked.
Create Your MixtapeWhere to start
Every route below is a real, drivable itinerary, not a locked-in package: do it self-drive at your own pace, or hand the driving to a small group tour if you'd rather not deal with rental cars and unfamiliar roads. Two examples are shown here; the full set covers the North and South Islands end to end.
A loop, not a there-and-back: the Hot Water Beach tide window nobody explains properly, and the drive north we'd skip.
Milford is worth it, but not the way most people do it. Doubtful Sound, Wanaka over Queenstown on the nights that matter, and the drive timings nobody agrees on.
Plus 14 more routes covering both islands end to end. See all 16 routes →
Not sure where yet? Start with what you love
Every route, journal piece and vetted listing on this site is tagged by interest as well as by region, so you can start from "I want great hikes" just as easily as "I'm going to the Coromandel." Pick an interest below and it jumps straight to the Travel Mixer with that interest already selected. It pulls the honest picks that match from what's already published here, not generated, just filtered to what you actually asked for. See the West Coast NZ Mixtape for a real example of what a finished mix looks like.

How it works
Both islands or one, then whatever you're actually into: hiking, wine, a specific fiord.
The Mixer pulls from what's already published and fact-checked: never an AI-generated guess at a place we haven't verified.
Routes, journals and Mixtapes that actually fit your trip. If we haven’t been there yet, we’ll tell you straight up.
Example: South Island + Nature & Wildlife
The actual playlists
A real Spotify playlist per region: regional and wider NZ artists mixed in with tracks that just fit the drive. One built so far; more come as the regional Mixtapes do.

Why this exists
We live here. We're not paid to make every spot sound incredible, and we won't. If a beach is better at low tide, we'll say so. If the famous lookout isn't worth the crowd, we'll send you to the one three minutes further on that is. That's the whole pitch.
Read our promise →What "trust us" actually means here
Instead, here's exactly how a place earns a spot on this site: see the full method on How We Vet.
We've stayed there, done the tour, or eaten the meal ourselves, recently enough to reflect current reality.
Screened against public, checkable data: rating thresholds, review volume, an actual read of recent reviews. Source always linked.
Same reasoning is why you won't see a "trusted by" logo strip on this site either: Mixtape isn't partnered with any brand or platform, so we won't imply it is.
The unfiltered picks
What's actually worth your time, not what ranks best. We put the obvious choice next to what locals actually do, argue both fairly, then give a real verdict, never a hedge.
One email. The real driving times, the crowd patterns, and the two things we'd change about our own first trip.
